Why the Vault Exists
During the twentieth century archivists increasingly realized that vast numbers of historical records were vulnerable to destruction. To preserve the information contained in these documents, large-scale preservation projects began photographing records page by page. The images were stored on microfilm reels, a photographic medium capable of preserving thousands of pages while remaining extremely stable when stored under proper conditions.
Beginning in the 1930s and expanding rapidly after the Second World War, preservation teams traveled to archives across Europe, the Americas, and many other regions to film historical records. These filming campaigns captured countless registers and administrative documents that might otherwise have deteriorated or been lost over time.
The Global Scale of the Collection
Over the decades the filming program expanded into one of the largest archival preservation efforts ever undertaken. Millions of microfilm reels were produced from archives around the world and transported to the vault for permanent storage. Together they represent billions of document images spanning centuries of recorded history.
The geographic scope of the preserved collections is remarkable. Records were filmed in parish archives across France, Italy, Spain, and Germany, in civil registration offices throughout Europe and Latin America, and in municipal archives in regions such as the Netherlands and Scandinavia. Numerous church and government repositories across North America also participated in these filming programs.
For genealogists this global effort created an extraordinary safeguard for historical documentation. Vast quantities of records were preserved long before digital technology made widespread online access possible.
Types of Records Preserved in the Vault
The collections preserved in the vault include many of the core record types used in genealogical research. Because filming projects were carried out in thousands of archives, the preserved material reflects the wide range of documents historically created by churches, governments, and local administrations.
Church records. Parish registers documenting baptisms, marriages, and burials form one of the largest components of the filmed collections. In many parts of Europe these registers date back several centuries and provide the earliest continuous documentation of families.
Civil records. Government birth, marriage, and death registers introduced during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were widely photographed. These records typically include standardized information about individuals, their parents, occupations, and places of residence.
Administrative and population records. Census schedules, probate files, court records, military registrations, and migration documents frequently appear among the preserved collections. These sources help researchers reconstruct households, track family movements, and understand the broader historical context in which ancestors lived.
How the Preservation Process Worked
The preservation of records followed a structured process designed to create reliable archival copies. First, agreements were negotiated with archives, churches, and government institutions that held historical documents. Once permission was granted, specialized cameras were used to photograph every page of the record books.
The resulting images were recorded onto microfilm reels capable of storing thousands of pages. Multiple copies were produced so that one set could be used for research access while the master preservation copies were stored under controlled conditions. These master films were transported to the Granite Mountain Records Vault and placed in archival storage chambers designed to maximize their longevity.
In recent decades the preservation strategy has gradually shifted toward digital imaging. Many of the microfilm collections preserved in the vault have been scanned and converted into digital images that can now be accessed online. The original microfilm masters remain preserved as a long-term archival safeguard.
Why Researchers Cannot Visit the Vault
Despite its importance within the genealogy community, the Granite Mountain Records Vault is not open to public visitors. The facility functions as a preservation archive rather than a research center, and access is limited to authorized staff responsible for maintaining the collection.
Researchers instead access the preserved material through digital platforms and affiliated research locations. Over the past two decades, large portions of the microfilm collection have been digitized and made available online. Millions of historical images that once required specialized microfilm readers can now be viewed through genealogy databases and digital archives.
A Monument to Genealogical Preservation
The Granite Mountain Records Vault represents one of the most ambitious preservation initiatives ever undertaken for historical research. By systematically photographing records from thousands of archives and storing them in a secure mountain facility, archivists created a safeguard for an enormous portion of the world’s genealogical heritage.
